Heights
Introduction
Heights was a mecca for collectors in the late 1970's. Â Early explorers like Charles Clark, Les Jackson and myself and Geoff Smith were able to extract some of the most incredible water clear, colour zoned twinned specimens imaginable. Â It was hard work - the rock shattered chisels, and there were no battery drills in those days. Â
The roof was always suicidal - Geoff used to love posing under a slab about to fall from the roof - so here's two pics - Geoff posing, and me posing, in the dark blue overalls! Â The big roadstone quarry at Heights has encroached on the workings now - mineral collectors are desperate to get back into the workings, but we did recently get a brief look in - and you'd need to be hell bent on suicide to go collecting in there now. Â
Charles Clark was one of the early and prolific collectors in Heights, and we hope to feature some of his specimens for sale shortly.
The photo of me collecting in there was taken by Geoff. Â I was just about to extract my best specimen - a flawless, perfect 2" water clear colour zoned crystal. Â
